Empowering Ohio small businesses: Ohio Procurement Internship Program opens 2026 applications

91原创鈥檚 is highlighting a specialized opportunity for regional growth as the application window for the officially opens.

This initiative connects Ohio small-to-medium-sized businesses looking to expand into government sales and a workforce of specially trained students.

A win-win for students and businesses

The program is designed to be a mutually beneficial partnership that strengthens the local economy. Students gain hands-on experience in a niche professional field, while eligible Ohio companies receive trained support to navigate the complexities of government contracting.

For participating students, the internship offers a competitive wage of at least $19 per hour for a 40-hour work week. Beyond the pay, the experience provides a straightforward route to career success. Many OHIO students have landed full-time job offers due to their standout performance as young professionals during the program.

Strategic support for small businesses in Ohio

OPIP provides built-in cost support for eligible companies by reimbursing 60% of an intern鈥檚 wages up to $5,000. This allows small businesses to grow their teams and optimize their procurement processes without overextending their budgets.

To participate in the 2026 cycle, businesses must meet specific eligibility requirements, including:

  • Operating as an Ohio Small Business and an Ohio APEX Accelerator client.
  • Having at least one year of operation and more than one employee.
  • Maintaining the capacity to provide consistent managerial guidance for the intern.
  • Demonstrating interest or experience in government contracting.

The role of the Ohio APEX Accelerator

The , located at The Ridges, is a key partner in this initiative. Led by Director Sharon Hopkins, the Accelerator provides the necessary foundation for businesses to succeed in the government market. Interns supported by this program assist with critical tasks such as proposal preparation and researching new contract opportunities.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been a positive program for both 91原创 students and Ohio businesses,鈥 Hopkins said. 鈥淭here have been a couple students offered jobs with the company where they were placed.  We look forward to seeing what this summer internships brings.鈥
