Lauren Johnson: Finding confidence through connection and opportunity

A Zanesville native graduating with a degree in business and minors in marketing and communications, Lauren Johnson鈥檚 college experience was shaped by hands-on learning, mentorship and a willingness to step outside of her comfort zone.

Initially drawn to OHIO Zanesville for its affordability and proximity to home, Johnson quickly found that the campus offered far more than convenience鈥攊t provided opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.

Her defining moment came during her first internship with the campus marketing department, where she began to see her future take shape.

鈥淚 realized it was something I was really passionate about and something I really wanted to explore after graduation,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 had a lot of great mentors who guided me and encouraged me to follow my dreams along the way.鈥

Through her work on campus, Johnson built strong relationships with faculty and staff who supported her development and helped shape her college experience.

鈥淧eople like Tracey Humphrey, Heather Sands and Katie McCarty all supported me as a student and helped me be the person I have become over the last four years,鈥 she said.

Like many students, Johnson faced challenges early in her academic career. A public speaking course during her sophomore year tested her confidence and pushed her to grow in new ways.

鈥淢y biggest challenge was definitely my public speaking class my sophomore year. I remember being so nervous for every speech,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut as the years went on, I got more experienced and gained a confidence I have never felt before.鈥

Beyond the classroom, some of Johnson鈥檚 most meaningful memories came from the everyday moments shared with fellow students鈥攑articularly during summer 2024, when campus renovations brought student employees together in the library.

鈥淎ll of us student workers had so much fun just talking and messing around,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e even got to watch the Summer Olympics on one of the big TVs.  I will forever cherish the friendships I鈥檝e made.鈥

Following graduation, Johnson will begin her career full-time as a membership services specialist with the Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce, where she looks forward to continuing her work in marketing and community engagement, supporting local businesses and strengthening connections across the region.

Her advice to future students reflects the approach that shaped her own experience.

鈥淚 would definitely tell new students to get involved with everything campus has to offer,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hough we have a small campus, there are so many activities, events and clubs to be a part of. Going to OHIO Zanesville and getting involved is one of the best things I鈥檝e done for myself and more so my future career.鈥

Chaunce Johnson is preparing for graduation

Chaunce Johnson: Building resilience and embracing the journey

For Chaunce Johnson, a Spring 2026 graduate of the nursing program, the path to commencement has been defined by perseverance, adaptability and a strong sense of community.

Drawn to OHIO Zanesville for its well-regarded nursing program, Johnson quickly discovered that the campus offered more than just a degree鈥攊t provided a support system that helped him succeed both academically and personally.

鈥淚 like to think OHIO Zanesville chose me,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here was a whole community ready to support me and all the events we hosted on campus together.鈥

One of his most memorable moments came early in his academic journey during his first nursing exam鈥攁 moment that shifted his confidence and mindset.

鈥淲hen I clicked submit on my test, I had to cover my eyes before looking,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hen I saw I scored way above what I thought I could, I knew I could do it.鈥

Throughout the program, Johnson credits the nursing faculty for creating an engaging and supportive learning environment that extended beyond traditional coursework.

鈥淭hey made learning interactive and created opportunities for us to connect outside of class,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat made a big difference in how we grew as students.鈥

The demands of the nursing program required Johnson to develop strong time management skills and resilience, particularly when facing setbacks.

鈥淵ou cannot let one bad test or assignment hold you back,鈥 he said. 鈥淚f you make a mistake, it is okay.鈥

Reflecting on his experience, Johnson points to the close-knit nature of his cohort as one of the most meaningful aspects of his time at OHIO Zanesville.

鈥淥ur nursing class was small, and we all got along,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t made long lectures feel shorter and clinical days go by faster. We built strong relationships that made the experience even more rewarding.鈥

After graduation, Johnson will continue building his nursing career in the surgical ICU at The Ohio State University, where he looks forward to applying the skills and knowledge he developed at OHIO Zanesville.

His message to future students is rooted in authenticity and connection.

鈥淒on鈥檛 miss the opportunity to be a part of the community and, more importantly, be yourself,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he community at OHIO Zanesville feels like a second home.鈥
