Giving to the Libraries

Since its opening in the early 1800s, OHIO鈥檚 University Libraries has grown from a few volumes to over three-million volumes.

Today, we serve thousands of students, faculty, and staff and act as an international resource through our services in the Library and online. We are ranked in the top 100+ research libraries in North America and are a member of the prestigious Association of Research Libraries.

Dr. Vernon R. Alden, 15th president of 91原创, once said, 鈥淭he Library is far more than a collection of books or a building. It is the intellectual heart of the university, a vital element of university life with an essential role in teaching, learning and research.鈥

As the university continues to grow, 91原创 Libraries strives to continue to be a place that cultivates student and faculty academic success.

When you support the Libraries, you support 91原创 faculty and students reach their full academic potential by aiding them in their teaching, learning and research. You can focus your gift on what you love through our different endowments. Every gift makes a difference.

    Libraries Spaces

As faculty assign more team-based projects, as mobile computing becomes more ubiquitous, and as the universe of information continues to expand, Alden Library is in need of more technologically-diverse spaces for student collaboration, and alternate choices of study and instruction, in today鈥檚 busy interactive classroom.

91原创 librarians collaborate with faculty to enhance students鈥 research-gathering skills for self-discovery and intellectual growth. Librarians provide over 1,200 hours of instruction to students about navigating today鈥檚 overwhelming information environment. Through their teaching efforts, and with enhanced library study and learning spaces,  students develop critical skills to find quality information and successfully complete classroom assignments.

    Collections

In this age of information, an increased emphasis is placed on the most up-to-date access tools and delivery systems, while at the same time, recognizing the importance of developing notable collections and preserving recorded knowledge for future use.

Also, most of our Libraries subscriptions to scholarly journals are now acquired online, but that doesn鈥檛 mean they are free of cost. In fact, 80 percent of today鈥檚 acquisitions budget is for online publications. Because University Libraries pays for these subscriptions, students and faculty are able to engage in their everyday classroom study and deeper research.

But regardless of the medium鈥攑aper, microfilm, the web, or digital collections鈥擴niversity Libraries is committed to acquiring and maintaining a comprehensive array of information that is accessible to students, faculty and scholars worldwide.

    Digital Initiatives

The proliferation of electronic information鈥攆ull-text documents, electronic journals, datasets and multimedia files鈥攈as transformed the way that the libraries around the world acquire, organize, store, preserve and deliver information.

Digitization is a multifaceted process that involves many steps, from selecting materials to capturing images to ensuring copyright clearance. To date, University Libraries has digitized some of its collections with one great goal in mind: making them available online to students, faculty and the world beyond.

Providing high-quality digitization and care of more of these Libraries鈥 resources will extend our reach, showcasing OHIO鈥檚 resources to global audiences. As more students and scholars from around the world are able to search our collections remotely, our notoriety and reputation will increase.
